New telecom policy News
The Union Cabinet Wednesday approved the National Digital Communications Policy (NDCP) 2018.
According to the draft of the policy, NDCP is focused on increasing high-speed broadband penetration, with use of modern technologies like 5G and optical fibres across the country at affordable rates.
The proposed National Telecom Policy (NTP) 2018 will be placed for public comments for 15-20 days.
The NTP roadmap will be placed before the inter- ministerial panel this week, she said. "Big thrust of the policy is internet for all and second is make in India."
An inter-ministerial group, which has been constituted to look into the financial issues of the telecom sector and suggest remedial measures, is expected to submit its report later this month.
The National Telecom Policy, 2012, had taken key steps such as full mobile number portability, liberalisation of spectrum, and allowing delinking of spectrum from licence, among others.
The meeting is expected to be chaired by Telecom Secretary Aruna Sundararajan, and service providers as well as prominent industry bodies have been invited to place their ideas and inputs on the upcoming policy, said multiple sources.
