As soon as the judge pronounced the verdict, the convicts, who were produced before court through video conferencing, broke into tears.  Additional Session Judge Satish Kumar Arora issued the death warrant against them.

A three-judge bench of the top court, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra will pronounce the verdict in the case. 

The five men and a juvenile lured a Delhi student and her male friend onto a bus in New Delhi on December 16, 2012, before repeatedly raping the woman.

The Supreme Court's verdict in the December 16 gang-rape case will have the "best demonstrative effect" in containing crimes against women in Delhi which recorded a case of rape every four hours last year, the police administration believes.

Often portrayed, sans any substantial evidence, as the "most brutal" face of that fateful night's violence, the juvenile is said to be oblivious of the latest developments in case.

The central government announced a Nirbhaya Fund with a corpus of Rs 3,000 crore in 2013 to support initiatives towards ensuring safety of women, following nationwide outrage after the December 2012 gang rape. But since then, there hasn`t been any information from the Women and Child Development (WCD) Ministry about utilisation of the fund.

The bench - comprising Justices Dipak Misra, R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan - explained the crime met the "rarest of the rare" standard.
