Brent crude futures rose to $71.09 per barrel at 0104 GMT, up 7 cents from their last close. Brent surged more than 3 percent on Tuesday to hit its highest level since late 2014, at $71.34 a barrel.
US crude production has risen by 15 percent since mid-2016 to 9.66 million barrels per day, not far from top producers Russia and Saudi Arabia, and increasing drilling activity for new production means output is expected to grow further.
Oil fell on Thursday, dipping back towards 12-year lows on persistent concerns about a supply overhang and the outlook for demand.
Front month U.S. crude fell 28 cents to $60.49 a barrel by 0152 GMT. Brent futures were down 25 cents at $64.86 a barrel.
Brent futures were up 60 cents at $64.62 a barrel by 0310 GMT. U.S. crude prices were also up 60 cents at $58.59 a barrel.
