The Pentagon Thursday acknowledged targeting a top Islamic State group commander, Omar al-Shishani, in an airstrike.
The Pentagon says that a top Islamic State commander believed to have been killed earlier this year was likely at an IS meeting Sunday near Mosul, Iraq.
Citing a "military source," Amaq said yesterday Shishani was killed "in the town of Sharqat.

Top Islamic State commander leader Omar al-Shishani, known as Omar the Chechen, was "seriously injured" in a recent strike in northeastern Syria but not killed despite US suggestions to the contrary, a monitoring group said.
The target of the March 4 attack was Omar al-Shishani, a Georgian fighting with Islamic State in Syria, the Pentagon said in a statement.
