MEA Secretary (East), Periasamy Kumaran, highlighted that discussions on the Code of Conduct (CoC) in the South China Sea should be effective, substantive, and inclusive of the interests of all stakeholders, including those not party to the negotiations.
The MEA also highlighted that both sides recognise the Philippines' unique archipelagic defence needs and, in this context, Indian defence platforms, particularly those suited for coastal and maritime operations, are seen as a good fit for Manila's evolving defence doctrine.
Notably, India and the Philippines established diplomatic relations in November 1949. Since then, the two countries have built a strong partnership in areas such as trade and investment, defence, maritime cooperation, agriculture, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and digital technologies. Both sides also collaborate closely at the regional level, particularly through India’s Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with ASEAN.
The deal will now allow each country to deploy troops on the other's soil. The development signals a bold military alignment that many believe could upend China's dominance in the region.
