On July 3, the world observes International Plastic Bag Free Day, a day to promote a reduction in the use of plastic bags. Concerned about the harm single-use plastic bags were causing to the environment, a group of organisations and individuals started the Bag Free World campaign, which is the driving force behind this effort, back in 2008. Their mission is to promote sustainable alternatives while increasing public awareness of the harmful consequences that plastic bags have on the environment, wildlife, and human health.

The study comes as a growing number of countries, including India, the UK and Belgium, have banned sale of single-use plastic products, including drinking straws, and plant-based versions have become popular alternatives.

In the order issued by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) of the Ministry of Environment, it was said that from July 1, 2022, 19 types of single-use plastic products will be banned in the whole country.
