Potassium bromate News
The West Bengal Bakery Co-ordinators Committee and West Bengal Baker's Association said tests showed the absence of certain harmful chemicals which were reported in bread samples by a recent Centre For Science and Environment (CSE) study.
Potassium bromate is not allowed as an additive in packaged drinking water but its permissible limit as contaminant has been fixed because its traces are found in groundwater or when water undergoes treatment, FSSAI has said.
Leading bread makers on Thursday said that they will give up the use of potassium bromate and potassium iodate in wake of a Centre for Science and Environment study flagging their harmful effects on health, including causing cancer. The CSE welcomed the decision.
The CSE on Monday released a report which said that Indian bread manufacturers use potassium bromate and potassium iodate for treating flour while making bread.
The regulator has also recommended removal of potassium bromate from the list of permissible food additives to the Health Ministry following the CSE report.
Bread samples of virtually all top brands in Delhi contained cancer-causing chemicals, a study released on Monday said.
CSE has also urged food regulator FSSAI to ban the use of potassium bromate and potassium iodate with immediate effect and prevent their routine exposure to Indian population.
Evidence about the health effects of potassium bromate and potassium iodate are mounting.
