Located amidst the picturesque surroundings of the towering Western Ghats on the Mysuru-Ooty highway in Karnataka, Bandipur Tiger Reserve is an important part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve that constitutes Karnataka's Rajiv Gandhi National Park (Nagarahole) to its Northwest, Tamil Nadu's Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary to its South, and Kerala's Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary to its Southwes.

The tiger is known as ST-16 allegedly died on Saturday due to the overdose of tranquillizer. This tiger had recently been shifted from Ranthambore to Sariska and its death has left animal lovers sad and aggrieved over the callousness of Sariska forest officials.

The minister said that the government through the National Tiger Conservation Authority/Project Tiger has taken a number of steps for the protection of the big cat and other wildlife species which includes efforts to prevent poaching and other illegal acts.
