Nadal, who has won the French Open title an unbelievable 14 times, is targetting playing in Paris Olympics next year. He added that 2024 is going to be his last year on a tennis court as his body is not supporting his ambitions.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion suffered the hip injury during the Australian Open in January and has not played a single tenni match since then.

In his first ATP Tour match since the US Open and his first as a father, Nadal displayed glimpses of brilliance but was unable to maintain it, especially down the stretch when he appeared out of sorts.

Nadal and Federer share a rivalry dating back to 2004, and while they were the fiercest of rivals on the tennis court, they remain the best of friends off it. Federer first faced Nadal in 2004 at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Miami. They clashed a further 39 times over the years, competing against each other in 24 finals.

Federer was replaced by Italian Matteo Berrettini in Team Europe, who were tied at 2-2 with Team World after the opening day's matches.
