Pakistan has followed a thin line to maintain ties with the Gulf nations amid increasing bilateral rivalries. 

Pakistan's former army chief Gen Raheel Sharif left for Riyadh on Friday to head a 41-nation Islamic military alliance after getting the government's approval, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said amidst concerns here about the Saudi-led grouping.

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday appointed Lieutenant General Qamar Javed Bajwa as the 16th chief of Army staff of Pakistan armed forces.

Sharif hosted a dinner for the retiring army chief where senior officials from armed forces and civilian institutions and politician attended.

The US State Department congratulated Raheel Sharif and his family after his announcement of retirement as Army Chief General.

 An announcement is expected on Saturday about the appointment of the new army chief.​

In the appeal, Sardar Adnan Saleem Khan Mazari​ cited the history of field marshals and stated that the late President Muhammad Ayub Khan had also served at the same post.
