He previously held the positions of Special Director, CBI, and Director-General, Bureau of Civil Aviation Security. Earlier in Gujarat, he served as Commissioner of Police in Surat and Vadodra cities.
A 1984-batch IPS officer from Gujarat cadre, Asthana was appointed as Delhi police chief, three days before he was to superannuate. He also had a controversial stint in the CBI, was removed in 2018 and was made chief of the Border Security.
Asthana replaced DG Indo-Tibet Border Police (ITBP) chief S S Deswal who was holding the additional charge of BSF since March 2020.
He was presently working at the Director-General of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) in Delhi and holds an additional charge of the Narcotics Control Bureau.
In October 2017, Asthana was appointed as the special director, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
On October 15, 2018, the CBI registered an FIR against Asthana for allegedly accepting a bribe from an accused probed by him in return for ensuring relief and was given clean chit in the case.
In 2019, a total of 2,448 kilograms of Heroin was seized compared to 1,258 kg in 2018. Similarly, in 2019, the total seizure of opium was 7,317 kg and in 2018, it was recorded 4,307 kg.
The case against Asthana was lodged after Hyderabad-based businessman Sana in his complaint to the CBI had alleged that he paid a bribe of Rs 2 crore to Asthana so that he could be spared of any action in an investigation linked to meat exporter Moin Qureshi.
