Rogers Cup 2017 News
The 20-year-old German used his booming serve to overpower Federer 6-3, 6-4 Sunday as the Swiss superstar never got a chance to get into the match.
Speculations were also that Federer was in the race for the numero uno spot and now with Nadal's shock exit, the road seems clear for him. If he is able to win the Rogers Cup tomorrow, then he is bound to become the World No.1 yet again, on August 21 with an equal or a better finish than Nadal at the Cincinnati masters.
Federer hammered five aces, made just two double faults and won 81 percent of his first serve points in the 68-minute centre court match. He dominated at the net, winning 21 or 25 points.
Federer was sloppy from the start on centre court, sending routine forehands wide and providing the underdog Ferrer with early break opportunities in the ATP 1000 event in Montreal.
Earlier this week, 19-time Grand Slam winner announced his return to Canadian hardcourt after six years of gap. Thus, Nadal and Federer will stand as top seeds for the first time since Monte Carlo Open, back in April 2011.
