"Our missiles are for our defence and for peace, they are not offensive. Know that while there is a technical need to conduct missile tests, we will do so and we will ask the permission of no one," Rouhani told reporters in Tehran.

Their win in Friday's election marks the first time reformists have totally controlled Tehran's municipal council since such votes began in 1999.

"Heartiest congratulations to my friend, President @HassanRouhani on his re-election," Modi tweeted in English and Persian languages.

Rouhani said, "We are at the edge of a great historical decision. Our nation will announce if it continues on the path of peacefulness or if it wants to choose tension." 

Rouhani faces a tough battle for re-election on May 19 as conservative opponents attack his failure to revive Iran's stagnant economy.
