The scheme aims to give a further boost to digital transactions in the country. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the government’s decision on Wednesday. The minister also informed that in November, 423 crore digital transactions valued at Rs 7.56 lakh crore.

Following demonetisation, when huge rush of people can be witnessed using payment mechanisms like point of sale (PoS) machines, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) on Monday too has clarified that its RuPay debit cards can be used at such terminals for transactions.

State Bank of India (SBI) waived merchant discount rate (MDR) on the RuPay Debit Cards with immediate effect. 

The government on Friday said nearly 1.65 lakh Jan Dhan account holders, of the total 18 crore accounts opened under the scheme, have availed overdraft facility.

Country's largest lender State Bank on Thursday launched a RuPay Platinum debit card in association with National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI).

A record 13.2 crore new bank accounts have been opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana in last six months with Rs 11,000 crore coming in as deposits, President Pranab Mukherjee said today.

Narendra Modi launched Jan Dhan Yojana, under which bank accounts and RuPay debit cards with inbuilt insurance cover of Rs 1 lakh will be provided to crores of persons.

Plans are afoot to open as many as 1 crore bank accounts on the first day of the launch of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY).
