A private ceremony will take place at the court on Wednesday morning, attended by Ginsburg`s family, friends and other Supreme Court justices, a court statement said on Monday. Some of Ginsburg`s former law clerks will serve as pallbearers and will be lined up on the court`s steps when the casket arrives.
Ginsburg`s casket will be placed outside, under the court`s portico, in a break from tradition prompted by coronavirus-related health concerns.
Usually, the casket of a dead justice is placed in the court`s Great Hall, where the public can view it.
Ginsburg died Friday of complications from metastatic pancreatic cancer at age 87. A legal trailblazer and champion of women's rights, she became the high court's second female justice in 1993.
US President Donald Trump said, "She led an amazing life. What else can you say? She was an amazing woman," the Republican president told reporters after learning of Ginsburg`s death after a campaign rally in Minnesota. "I’m sad to hear that."
US Democratic Presidential candidate Joe Biden said, "She was fierce and unflinching in her pursuit of ... civil rights for everyone. Her opinions and her dissents are going to continue to shape the basis for law for a generation ... There is no doubt - let me be clear - that the voters should pick the president and the president should pick the justice for the Senate to consider."
