However, the 27-year-old Pant failed to live up to the expectations in the IPL 2025 season, scoring just 269 runs in 14 matches in his first stint as LSG captain. Despite his underwhelming performance, LSG are likely to persist with Pant for IPL 2026 season. However, LSG are expected to make strategic realignments before the next season. The Lucknow-based franchise might consider releasing some under-performing players before the IPL 2026 auction and buy some impactful performers. Rahul, too, weighed in on the matter during a Star Sports interview. Reflecting on the viral incident, he admitted it was an uncomfortable moment that affected the entire team.

While Goenka’s comments about retaining players with a team-first mindset were made after the retention announcement, KL Rahul made it clear that his decision to leave the franchise was already set in motion long before these remarks.

LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka took a pointed dig at KL Rahul while announcing the team's IPL 2025 retentions, emphasizing their choice of "players with a mindset to win" who prioritize team goals over personal ambitions. 

KL Rahul has expressed interest in being retained by the Lucknow Super Giants, but no assurances have been given. Rahul’s leadership and batting style are under scrutiny, making his retention uncertain. 

Mishra elaborated that while the exchange between Goenka and Rahul was indeed heated, it was not as severe as the media had portrayed.

Earlier, the LSG owner had shown his anger at Rahul afetr Lucknow lost a one-sided affair vs SRH. Goenka then hosted Rahul a dinner party to end the rumours of rift.

As the dejected LSG players made their way back to the dressing room, owner Sanjiv Goenka couldn't hide his displeasure.

Vice-captain Nicholas Pooran emerged as the frontrunner to lead LSG in Rahul's stead, signaling a potential changing of the guard within the franchise.

LSG lost the match to SRH by a massive margin of 10 wickets with over ten overs remaining in the game. This defeat makes it even more tougher for them to qualify for the playoffs.
