Paris Saint-Germain striker Lionel Messi on Wednesday posted an emotional message for his Argentine teammate Sergio Aguero, who announced his retirement from professional football.

Aguero who moved to Barcelona on a free transfer in the summer, had to be substituted during his team's 1-1 draw with Alaves in October after receiving medical assistance on the pitch to treat chest pains and dizziness.

Aguero was signed on by Barcelona earlier this year after the striker became a free agent at the end of his contract with Manchester City.

Barcelona will not be Aguero's first experience of playing in La Liga. In 2006 he left Independiente for Atletico Madrid and quickly made his name as one of the best strikers in Europe. He then joined Premier League club Manchester City in 2011.

Aguero’s contract runs out at the end of the 2020/21 campaign, when he will become a free agent. Aguero has been a peripheral figure at City this season, making eight Premier League appearances after struggles with injury and illness.

Despite Aguero's absence, City registered a 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Wednesday. They will visit West Bromwich Albion next Tuesday.

Aguero, who is the club's record goalscorer, limped off with the injury in Monday's 5-0 Premier League home win over Burnley.  

Meanwhile, Leicester City beat Birmingham City 1-0 to book their place in the last eight -- Ricardo Pereira`s late header sealing a tight Midlands derby.

Agüero was sent on to replace Jesus in the 67th minute and it did not take long for him to make an impact as his perfectly-timed run into the box was picked out immaculately by Kevin De Bruyne, leaving the Argentine with a simple tap-in.

He achieved the feat during Manchester City's drubbing of Aston Villa in the ongoing competition.
