New Delhi: The government has procured 1.11 lakh tonnes of pulses so far from farmers for creating buffer stock and also contracted to import 38,500 tonnes as part of its effort to control the retail prices.
Online national agriculture market is likely to kick-start in February with initial integration of around 200 wholesale markets in the states like Karnataka, Gujarat, Telangana and Maharashtra, Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh said today.
Indian government is planning to create a buffer stock of 3.5 lakh tonnes of pulses during the current 2015-16 crop year through domestic purchase or imports to check high pulses prices.
To prevent further spike in retail prices of onions, central agency SFAC has more than doubled the supply of the key kitchen staple to 250 tonnes a day in the national capital market and NCR areas.
Fearing price rise becoming an issue during Delhi assembly polls, the Centre has decided to create a buffer stock of potato and onion to check prices in Delhi-NCR region.
The Agriculture Ministry has demanded that potato be exempted from import duties to boost domestic supplies of the vegetable and curb rise in its prices.
