An Islamist attack on a hotel in Mogadishu ended on Sunday after 29 people were killed during a siege lasting nearly 12 hours, police said.

A bomb blast at a guesthouse in northeast Kenya killed at least 12 people on Tuesday, in an attack claimed by Shabaab militants which last hit the area earlier this month.

Heavily-armed Shabaab fighters seized control of a Somali town near the Kenyan border on Friday after an attack on an army base that left several soldiers dead, local officials and residents said.

A former Somali MP who joined the Shabaab group in 2010 was one of two suicide bombers who killed 13 people near a United Nations and African Union base, the militants announced on Wednesday.

At least eight people were killed on Tuesday when two huge bombs went off near Mogadishu's airport, including one close to the UN's political office in the Somali capital, a security source said.

The United States has in recent years launched numerous drone strikes against Shabaab leaders, including the strike that killed its chief.
