During the day, it hit a high of 66,256.20 and a low of 65,906.65. The Nifty gained 95 points or 0.48 percent to settle at 19,889.70.
Rising for the second session in a row, the 30-share BSE Sensex climbed 306.55 points or 0.47 per cent to settle at 65,982.48.
Among the Sensex firms, Power Grid, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Tech Mahindra, Bajaj Finserv, ITC, Bharti Airtel, Nestle, NTPC, Bajaj Finance, Reliance Industries, Infosys and HDFC Bank were the major gainers.
After oscillating nearly 500 points between gains and losses during the day, the 30-share BSE Sensex declined 221.09 points or 0.33 percent to settle at 66,009.15.
The NSE Nifty declined 231.90 points or 1.15 percent to end below the 20,000 mark at 19,901.40.
Paper stocks gained on Wednesday with several counters moving up.
The shift comes after the government of Maharashtra, the state that is home to the country's financial capital Mumbai, changed the date for the holiday late on Monday.
