Gill feels privileged to be a part of "best batting line-up" but said the depth in their order allows the top three to express themselves freely.

Gill held the fort and built a crucial stand with Virat Kohli after Rohit Sharma fell in the very first over of the match. Gill exploited the Ahmedabad track and raced to 80 runs in just 73 balls. Shubman took 94 balls to reach the three-figure mark.

Yashasvi Jaiswal left India in a mess at 19/2 while chasing 249, Gill and Iyer dug deep to keep the innings from falling apart. With flawless technique and an unorthodox nature in their shots, Gill and Iyer raised a 94-run partnership to steer India out of a position when they walked on thin ice.

Rana's fourth over, which claimed the twin wickets of Ben Duckett and Harry Brook, decisively stifled the England innings, putting India firmly in control as the visitors never managed to rebuild despite fifties by skipper Jos Buttler (52) and Jack Bethell (51).

Gill had a poor outing in the recently passed Test series against Australia but then he made a terrific comeback in the Ranji Trophy, getting a ton.

Punjab had scored a paltry 55 in their first innings with Gill contributing just four runs. They were 24 for 2 in 13 overs in their second innings at stumps on the second day on Friday.

India’s star wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant took part in his first First-Class match since 2017-18. Pant also had a poor outing on the field as he was dismissed for just one run by Saurashtra’s Dharmendrasinh Jadeja.

Talking about the IPL retention rules, franchises can retain up to six players from their 2024 squads. This includes a maximum of five capped players and two uncapped Indian players, allowing teams to maintain their core roster.
