Williams has blitzed through the draw without dropping a set but faces a tricky third-round test against the 26th-seeded Stephens. Williams, 38, has defeated her 27-year-old compatriot in four straight matches since a defeat in the quarter-finals of the 2013 Australian Open.

Florida-born Collins battled hard in the first set on a stifling day at Rod Laver Arena but ended up steamrolled 7-6(2) 6-0 by eighth seed Kvitova.

The 25-year-old Collins had not won a match in her previous five Grand Slam appearances, but has now made it to the last four in her first main draw showing at Melbourne Park.

Sloane Stephens was disappointed but proud with her performance in Singapore after the American started well before fading to a 3-6 6-2 6-2 defeat by Ukraine`s Elina Svitolina. 

Stephens struggled to match Svitolina`s relentless pace with the Ukrainian moving 3-0 ahead after edging two epic games. 

After losing the first set, the 25-year-old made a thrilling comeback and conquered Pliskova in the next two games to eventually clinch a 0-6, 6-4, 6-1 win.
