New product launches, promotions, and financial schemes as well as pent-up demand coming from 2020 drove the smartphone market in the March quarter - which is the highest ever for the first quarter. The consumer demand will take a hit due to the ongoing COVID-19 wave and subsequent lockdowns, he added. The feature phone market registered a 14 percent y-o-y growth during the quarter, driven by strong shipments of JioPhone under its new model and subsequent promotions.

However, the feature phone market continued its decline with 32.4 million-unit shipments, registering a drop of 26.3 percent YoY in 2Q19.

Huawei, which was put on a trade blacklist by the United States since mid-May and was virtually barred from doing business there even earlier, shipped 37.3 million smartphones in China in the three months ended June, up 31% year-on-year, according to market research firm Canalys.

This is slightly below 2018's shipments that touched 1.39 billion.

The overall smartphone shipment is expected to reach nearly 1.6 billion units in 2017.
