A new wild animal rehabilitation center that has opened in Kyrgyzstan is hoping to reverse the damage climate change has done to the country's population of snow leopards. Often dubbed the "Switzerland of Central Asia," Kyrgyzstan's colossal mountains provided the perfect setting for snow leopards, but due to poaching, their numbers have fallen in recent years.
"Snow leopards denote the health of the ecosystem,' said actor-producer and climate changemaker Dia Mirza as she discussed the imminent dangers faced by the endangered cat in a 24-hour, virtual global initiative.
The lives of the already endangered big cats hang by a thread and there are as few as 4,000 of them remaining and numbers have fallen by a fifth in the last 16 years.
With only 4,000 snow leopards left in the wild and 500 of them in India, a new report has urged countries to take urgent action in the wake of climate change to save the endangered species and conserve its "fragile" mountain habitats.
