The US National Security Agency began tapping into North Korean computer networks in 2010, an effort that ultimately helped provide evidence to persuade the Obama administration that Pyongyang was behind the cyber attack on Sony Pictures, the New York Times reported on Sunday.

The US, which had blamed North Korea for a cyber attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment, Monday demanded that the communist country should compensate for the losses, resulting from the attack.

The US on Friday blamed North Korea for the cyber-attack on Hollywood movie studio Sony Pictures in which confidential information was leaked by hackers.

Executives at Sony Corp`s Hollywood movie studio sought to reassure employees on Monday that the studio would recover from a massive cyber attack that exposed internal emails and sensitive employee data.

Sony said its systems were back online and the company was investigating the cause of the disruption.
