The funeral is scheduled to be held on Saturday, sources close to SPB's family said. From youngsters to senior citizens, people lined up on sides of the highway towards Thiruvallur district at several spots including at the Red Hills junction to pay their last respects.

The galaxy of Indian cinema mourns the loss of S P Balasubrahmanyam, one of the greatest and brightest playback singer. He had a Guinness record for having sung over 40,000 songs, spread across 16 languages, in the last five decades. But one of the lesser-known facets about this singing sensation is that he himself had not aspired for a career in music.

SP Balasubrahmanyam has sung songs in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi and Malayalam movies. In fact, he has recorded over 40,000 songs in 16 Indian languages reportedly. The singer has been showered with several awards and honours in his illustrious singing career.

Ace director Priyadarshan said SPB would go down in history as a person who never had any enemies. SP Balasubrahmanyam sang for numerous Malayalam films and was a frequent visitor to the state to participate in musical events.

The noted musician SP Balasubrahmanyam crooned for many A-listers in Hindi and South film industry, with several honours and National Awards to his credit. 

The coronavirus attacked his lungs and permanently silenced the singer who had sung over 40,000 songs in 16 languages over a career spanning five decades.

Several celebrities and fans of the legendary singer extended condolences on social media. SP Balasubrahmanyam was extremely critical and on Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and other life support measures.
