This surprising finding may be an important clue to understanding those mysterious parts of the universe that make up 95 per cent of everything and don't emit light, such as dark energy, dark matter and dark radiation.
The data indicates that the location of the bright ice on the mountain peaks correlates almost exactly with the distribution of methane ice.
Previously, the team had estimated GN-z11's distance by determining its colour through imaging with Hubble and NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope.
