With the ground too dry to absorb the intense rainfall, which exceeded 400 litres per square metre in many areas and reached up to 600 litres in some, the torrential overnight downpours on Tuesday led to devastating flash floods.
Three additional deaths were reported in Andalusia and Castile-La Mancha, according to the regional emergency services.
The region's hardest hit was Valencia, where 92 fatalities were confirmed by Angel Victor Torres, Spain's Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory
