Extending its record-breaking run for the third day, the benchmark Sensex on Monday surged to close at a new life high of 31,109 while the Nifty ended above 9,600 for the first time ever as ample liquidity pushed up buying.
The NSE Nifty reclaimed the 9,200-mark by surging 98.55 points, or 1.08 percent, to close at 9,217.95 after moving in a range of 9,225.40 and 9,130.55.
Investors chose to sit tight Wednesday as the Sensex remained in the bearish territory for the second day, dropping further by 98 points, and anxiety concerning state poll results and a probable Fed rate hike grew.

The NSE Nifty after recapturing the crucial 7,500-mark closed at 7,485.35, up 9.75 points, or 0.13 percent.
The 50-share NSE Nifty failed to hold on to the psychological 7,100-mark as it tripped 90.85 points, or 1.28 percent, to end at 7,018.70.
The 50-share NSE Nifty also broke below the 7,200-mark with a plunge of 125 points.
At the close, the NSE Nifty was up 23.80 points, or 0.33 percent, at 7,234.55.
The BSE benchmark Sensex opened higher at 23,237.23 and hovered in a range of 23,434.91 to 22,920.84 before finishing at 23,381.87, showing a gain of 190 points or 0.82 percent.
The benchmark BSE Sensex slumped by over 800 points or 3.45 percent to 22,950.90 while the Nifty crashed 232.30 points or 3.21 percent to 6,983.40.

The 50-share NSE Nifty tumbled 82.50 points or 1.13 percent to close at 7,215.70 after touching a low of 7,177.75.
