On July 30, 2020, a Sukhoi Su-27 took off to track and intercept two US military aircraft. The US Air Force RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft and a P-8A Poseidon US Navy patrol plane were spotted flying over the neutral waters of Black Sea close to Russia's borders.

Finland alleges the Russian Sukhoi Su-27s remained inside its airspace for almost two minutes. Russian Defense Ministry says four Su-27 fighters were on a scheduled flight from the country’s northwest Karelia to Kaliningrad. Finnish Air Force scrambled its F/A-18C Hornets to intercept the Russian Sukhoi Su-27s.

The US P-8A Poseidon is tasked with anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASUW), and shipping interdiction roles while the RC-135 is used for gathering intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.

Eurofighter Typhoon fighters of the United Kingdom's 6 Squadron intercepted a group of Russian warplanes over the Baltic Sea on Thursday (June 4, 2020). Russian Ilyushin IL-20 COOT A intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft and two Sukhoi Su-27 combat jets flying over the Baltic Sea faced the Eurofighter Typhoons which had been launched from a military base as part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) Air Policing mission.

Armed with LRASMs, the B-1Bs with their advanced stand-off and counter-ship capabilities can destroy a designated target within groups of surface warships in electronic warfare environments.

Over the skies of Europe, the B-1B Lancers were joined by Sukhois, MiGs and F-16s as well as Turkish Air Force's KC-135 Stratotanker aerial refuelling aircraft. It was the first time ever that the B-1B Lancers flew with Su-27s and MiG-29s as their escort.

The skies over the neutral waters of Black and Baltic Seas saw some action on Friday (May 29, 2020) when Russian Sukhoi Su-27P and Su-30M combat aircraft intercepted the United States of Amerca Air Force B-1B Lancer strategic bombers. The Sukhoi fighters were launched after the B-1B bombers were detected by the Russian Western and Southern military districts radars.

The F-16s of the Belgian Air Force took off from Lithuania's Siauliai Air Base where they are currently based as part of NATO Baltic Air Patrol mission. The two Russian Tupolev Tu-160 Blackjack nuclear bombers and two Sukhoi Su-27 aircraft were flying over the Baltic Sea.

Russian Air Force operates Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-29, Sukhoi Su-27, Su-30 and Su-35 aircraft tasked with securing the country's airspace. These combat aircraft did not allow any violation of Russia's aerial boundaries, stated the Defense Ministry.

The US bombers did not violate Russia’s border and the interception by Su-27 jets were performed in strict compliance with the international air law.

The face-off between the Su-27 and RC-135 along with Gulfstream reconnaissance aircraft took place over the Baltic Sea.
