Rohan Bopanna and Zhang Shuai lost 6-2 4-6 9-11 in the mixed doubles quarterfinals event at Australian Open 2025, bringing curtains on India's campaign at the first Grand Slam of the season.   

Sumit Nagal failed to capitalise on his chances, losing 3-6 1-6 5-7 to his opponent from the Czech Republic at the Australian Open. 

Sumit Nagal, who reached the main draw of Australian Open 2024 through qualifiers, 31st-seeded Bublik in straight sets, which is a huge achievement.

Rohan Bopanna and Ramkukmar Ramanathan are  an  integral part  of  the  Indian  team which  has already  been announced  and  comprises Yuki  Bhambri (670-singles),  Prajnesh Gunneswaran  (235-singles) and  Divij Sharan  (134-doubles).

It is highly unlikely that India will be able to field a team in mixed event, the entries for which will be announced on Tuesday. The cut is likely to be around 50 and combined ranking of the Indian players Nagal (144) and Mirza (9) is 153.

Nagal's win was the first for an Indian men's singles tennis player at the Olympics since Leander Paes' bronze medal-winning run at Atlanta 1996.

In the release, AITA also did not appreciate Sania saying that a medal chance in the mixed team has been sacrificed. The AITA though remained optimistic that more withdrawals may push the Indian team in the competition.

ITF is giving priority to the singles players to fill the doubles draw. Nagal’s entry would also mean that India can now have a team in the mixed doubles draw as well.

Ramkumar Ramanathan also crashed out with a tame 1-6, 2-6 defeat against Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin. Sumit Nagal is now the only Indian left in fray for a main draw berth. He will take on Alejandro Tabilo in his second round.

The world number 14 lost to Norway’s Casper Ruud 7-6(6) 6-4 in Saturday’s Geneva Open final. Nagal, ranked 142 currently, will face Macorca (ranked 191) for the first time. The Indian has won two and lost five matches on the ATP Tour this season. He lost in the first round of the Australian Open this year after qualifying for the second round of the US Open in 2020.

The World No. 150 is into his first ATP Tour quarter-final. Entering the week, Nagal owned a 3-12 tour-level record. Albert Ramos-Vinolas continued his impressive run of form by defeating fellow lefty Dominik Koepfer 7-5, 6-4. Nagal encountered Thiem in the second-round clash of the 2020 US Open.

The Indian tried to fight fire with fire but the intensity shown by Berankis blew him away and he found himself serving to stay in the set. Nagal struggled to get on the board, missing two break points offered by Berankis in the fifth game but managed to break his rival in that game. Berankis was guilty of unforced errors in that short phase, giving easy points to Nagal.

Indian tennis star Sumit Nagal questioned the decision of postponing the tournament at the eleventh hour.  

India's No. 1 Prajnesh Gunneswaran on Thursday kept his hopes alive of making it to the main draw of the Australian Open after registering a tremendous comeback victory in the second round of the qualifiers. Gunneswaran, who is the lone Indian left in the fray, defeated Germany's Yannick Hanfmann 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 in an intense match that lasted for one hour and 22 minutes.

India's Sumit Nagal on Thursday saw his dreams of making it to the main round of the Australian Open crash as he lost his first qualifying round match against Egypt's Mohamed Safwat.
