Syrian rebels in the southern city of Daraa were surrendering their heavy weapons to government forces today, state media said, under a deal brokered by regime ally Russia.

Suspected Russian jets killed at least 20 people and wounded dozens early on Thursday when they dropped bombs on two residential buildings in a besieged rebel enclave east of the Syrian capital, residents and a war monitor said.

Syrian government troops surrounded Hama prison in the west of the country on Monday and fired tear gas after inmates revolted, seizing several guards, a monitoring group reported.

More than 500 people, including dozens of civilians, have been killed since a major Russian-backed regime offensive in Syria`s Aleppo province began this month, a monitor said Wednesday.
