Assam on Thursday bade an emotional farewell to its beloved Tarun Gogoi, state's longest-serving chief minister. His mortal remains were consigned to flames by his son Gaurav Gogoi, amid chanting of hymns, preceded by a gun salute and band played by the Assam Police.

Former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi will be cremated at the Navagraha crematorium ground in Guwahati on November 26. Assam's first chief minister was cremated at the Navagraha crematorium and a part of the ground was demarcated as his memorial.

Current Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal said, "It's the end of an era in Assam's public life. He was so vibrant and full of life until a few days back, couldn't believe this sad news."

Tarun Gogoi was undergoing treatment at Assam's Gauhati Medical College Hospital for post-COVID complications. The health condition of Gogoi had deteriorated CM Sarbananda Sonowal had said earlier.
