Delhi's previous biggest daily jump of 28,395 cases was recorded on April 20 last year. According to the data, Thursday's positivity rate is the highest since May 3, when it was 29.6 per cent.

While giving a statement about the rising infection of Coronavirus, UP CM Yogi Adityanath said that- the third wave has arrived but it is not as dangerous as the second wave. Along with this, CM Yogi appealed to the people to be alert and careful from COVID-19.

A source said, however, the latest data suggests that all eastern states have also reported high numbers of Omicron cases. "So, going by that it can be said that the third wave of COVID-19 pandemic across all states is being driven by the fast-spreading and highly transmissible Omicron variant," the source said.

Professor Manindra Agarwal of IIT Kanpur, however, warned that rallies during elections can prove to be a super spreader for Corona infection, as it is not easy to follow the Covid guidelines in such gatherings.

According to a senior official of the state government, though the daily rate of infection is high, it is not alarming. "There is no pressure on the hospitals and there is no report of Oxygen shortage in the state. Naturally, the government is trying to keep a close watch on the development and will impose restrictions when needed," the official said.

So far 23 cases of Omicron have been registered in India but still there is no need to fear because till now this variant has not killed anyone in the entire world. However, there is a need to be careful against it.

"It is unlikely that the third wave of Covid-19 of a magnitude comparable to the first and second will hit India. With time the pandemic will take an endemic form. We`ll continue to get cases but the severity will be highly reduced," Dr Randeep Guleria said.
