"Very few entrepreneurs have built something as profound as Travis Kalanick did with Uber. I`m enormously grateful for Travis` vision and tenacity while building Uber, and for his expertise as a board member," Uber Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi said in a statement.

Kalanick was forced out as the company`s CEO in July over a number of controversies and mis-steps, including allegations of widespread sexual harassment against women in the company.

The ride-sharing firm new head will make his first visit to Asia next month.

Kalanick`s sale is part of a deal struck by a consortium led by SoftBank Group Corp which is taking a 17.5 percent stake in Uber.
