Six Turkish citizens, two members each of three families, were killed in a blast in Istanbul's main shopping street on Sunday.

Ambulances rushed to the scene on the packed Istiklal Avenue, which police quickly cordoned off. The area falls in the city's Beyoglu district.

Turkey's justice minister says police have detained 18 people in connection with a foiled attack at a courthouse in the western city of Izmir that nevertheless killed a policeman and a courthouse employee.

Turkey has been hit by a series of bombings over the past 18 months, some of them blamed on Islamic State, others on Kurdish militants.
