The Government will approach global markets for long term gas supply pacts in view of low prices of the fuel, Power Minister Piyush Goyal said today.

The government is looking at the option of upgrading existing power plants into larger capacity Ultra Mega Power Projects (UMPPs) using clean technology and to offer them in plug and play mode, Power Minister Piyush Goyal said on Wednesday .

India will set up 5 more ultra mega power projects, entailing investments of around Rs 1 lakh crore, the government said Saturday.

Some ultra mega power projects (UMPPs) have been delayed due to a host of reasons, including non-finalisation of sites by states and land acquisition, Power Minister Piyush Goyal informed Parliament Thursday.

A week after scrapping the bidding process for two ultra mega power projects (UMPPs) in Tamil Nadu and Odisha, Union Power and Coal Minister Piyush Goyal Thursday said the government will invite tenders for at least 4-5 UMPPs over the next one year.

Government has started the process for setting up four new ultra mega power projects in Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha, which will together add 16,000 MW capacity to the country's power generation.

At present, the Ministry of Power awards ultra mega power projects (UMPPs) of 4,000 MW capacity each through international competitive bidding process.
