Hailing the Union Budget 2020 presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Parliament on Saturday (February 1), Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the government has announced several measures to give a big boost to the economy. ''I congratulate Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and her team for presenting the first Budget of the decade that has vision as well as action. New reforms announced in Budget will give a push to the economy. Govt has also announced many measures in Budget to push employment in the country," the Prime Minister said.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Budget 2020 in Lok Sabha, on Saturday (February 1). She recited a poem by Kashmiri poet Pandit Dinanath Kaul. Sitharaman recited a few lines from the poem which was in Kashmiri, along with its English translation, emphasising on 'hamara vatan' (our motherland) with references to the spirit of Kashmir.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Budget for its "vision and action". Hailing the budget, the PM said it will accelerate economic growth, financially empower every citizen and strengthen the foundation of the economy in the new decade.

Budget 2020 proposes a new tax regime that includes reductions of income tax slabs to reduce income tax rates and the total tax payable by individuals. Income between Rs 12.5 lakh and Rs 15 lakh will be taxed 25% less than the current 30%. Income above Rs 15 lakh will be subject to 30% tax.

After presenting the budget 2020, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman held a press conference and said that honest taxpayers need not fear the government. Taxpayers will not be bothered at all because the Government of India respects its taxpayers.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today slashed the personal income tax rate for individuals for fiscal year 2020-21. Under the new regime, taxpayers will pay 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% for incomes between Rs 5-7.5 lakh, Rs 7.5-10 lakh, Rs 10-12.5 lakh and Rs 12.5-15 lakh.

She also added that there will also be degree level full-fledged online education programme by institutions ranked in the top 100. Nirmala Sitharaman also mentioned that the Centre proposes to attach medical colleges with district hospitals on PPP model to deal with the shortage of doctors.
