As per a statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the DGP of West Bengal briefed the Union Home Secretary that the situation 'was tense but under control' and was being monitored closely. 

Senior IAS officer Rajiv Gauba on Thursday took charge as the Union Home Secretary.

Rajiv Mehrishi on Wednesday scotched rumours that he would be the next Governor of Jammu and Kashmir.

Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi is a 1978-batch Rajasthan cadre officer IAS officer.

"I don't think that any talks can take place with pre- conditions," Mehrishi told PTI in an interview while replying to a question on whether the Centre was inclined to hold talks with the separatists in Jammu and Kashmir without any conditions.

 Rajiv Gauba will be the new Union Home Secretary from August 31.

"The Governor and the Home Secretary held extensive discussions about issues relating to effective maintenance of law and order," a Raj Bhawan spokesman said after the meeting.

Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi on Monday said the government's demonetisation move helped choke Maoist funds which is evident from their desperation to snatch firearms.

Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi on Wednesday briefed Home Minister Rajnath Singh on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, according to official sources.

Following a directive of Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Mehrishi will visit Srinagar and attend a series of meetings with army, police and govt officials.

Seven security personnel, including officers from IAF and NSG, were so far killed during the operation, he added.
