United Nations Human Rights Council News

POK activists protest outside the headquarters of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Switzerland. The protesters allege that Pakistan has set up terrorist training camps in PoK, they demanded its closure.

China said that the U.S. Army and the militaries of its coalition partners should be held accountable for rights violations allegedly committed in Afghanistan. Council members agreed to mandate reports on any rights violations by the Taliban.

Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar asserted, "Terrorism continues to be one of the gravest threats to humankind." Jaishankar also said, "Terrorism can never be justified. It is a crime against humanity and violates the most fundamental human right--the Right to Life."

In a strong reaction to the election of Russia, China, Pakistan and Cuba, the countries known for their abysmal record on human rights violations, many people on social media lashed out at the UNHRC.

India on Wednesday highlighted Pakistan's hate speech against Indian leadership and the situation of minorities in the country at the UNHRC. India's First Secretary at United Nations in Geneva, Pawan Badhe said, "We are not baffled that Pakistan does well when it comes to inciting hatred..." Badhe added, "It’s well cherished an inherited culture of hatred makes it the perfect candidate for carrying forward the legacy of intolerance..."

Highlighting enforced disappearances in Pakistan at the UNHRC, India on Monday said that in Imran Khan’s 'Naya Pakistan' (new Pakistan), you may not return home. First Secretary Senthil Kumar at India's mission in United Nations Geneva, said, "In Imran Khan's Naya Pakistan, you may not return home."

Voicing concern for its citizens and the violation of their human rights in Jammu-Kashmir, India reiterated at the UN that one of the challenges it faced was Pakistan’s covert support to cross-border terrorism. Watch this video to know more.

Akbaruddin assured that India will strive to continue its balance and moderate approach towards the promotion and protection of human rights globally.

UN officials said the United States would be the first member to withdraw from the council.

When the Human Rights Council was created in 2006, the then US president George W Bush's administration shunned the body. 

On May 24, Sri Lanka's cabinet approved the new Office of Missing Persons without talking with the families.

Baloch representative to the United Nations Human Rights Council and the European Union Mehran Marri on Sunday condemned the move by the United States Government to sell F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan, saying that Islamabad would use them against the Baloch population.

The process to fix accountability as mandated by the latest UNHRC resolution for the alleged rights abuses during the conflict with the LTTE will be completely domestic, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera has said rejecting claims that it was a hybrid mechanism.

Tamil Nadu on Wednesday opposed any move to allow Sri Lanka hold an internal probe into alleged human rights violations and war crimes during hostilities in 2009 and urged the Modi government to take the lead at the UN and press for an international investigation on it.
