Under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Package, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday (May 14) announced support for migrants and urban poor. She said the government has permitted states to utilise State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for setting up a shelter for migrants.
Half of the region`s population live in cities and rapid urbanisation has helped lift 655 million people out of poverty, the bank said in a new report.
The central assistance for construction of these houses would be to the tune of Rs 1,188 crore.
The Centre has granted Rs 160 crore to Uttar Pradesh to construct houses for its urban poor, an official statement said on Wednesday.
The Centre has approved construction of around 84,500 more affordable houses for the urban poor in five states, including West Bengal and Punjab, with a total investment of Rs 3,073 crore, of which central assistance will be the tune of Rs 1,256 crore.
The initiative has first been launched in Pune and is expected to benefit 150,000 urban poor residents by the end of this year.
As many as 2,508 cities in 26 states have been selected under 'Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana' for providing affordable houses to the urban poor, the Lok Sabha was informed on Wednesday.
