Koch and Meir, clad in white spacesuits and tethered by cords to the station some 254 miles (408 km) above Earth, stepped into outer space at 7:38 am Eastern time (1138 GMT) to replace a faulty power unit designed to help condition energy stored from the station`s solar panels, NASA announced online as it showed live video of the action.
During the spacewalk, the astronauts replaced a camera system on the Canadarm2 robotic arm's "hand" known as "latching end effector" that spacewalkers installed on October 5, a high definition camera on the starboard truss of the station and replaced a fuse on the Dextre robotic arm extension.
Kelly and Lindgren returned to the space station's airlock where repressurization began about 3:19 p.m ET, marking the official end of the spacewalk.
Two US astronauts will perform a spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS) on Wednesday.
Halfway into a year in space -- the longest ever attempted at the International Space Station -- American astronaut Scott Kelly said Monday he misses fresh air but is adapting well.
