Sirisha Bandla is set to head to space on July 11 as part of Virgin Galactic's first fully crewed flight test. The 34-year-old aeronautical engineer will become the third Indian-origin woman to head to space. Bandla will be astronaut no 004 and her flight role will be Researcher Experience.

After she embarks on her journey on July 11, Bandla would be the fourth Indian to fly into space. Bandla is vice-president, government affairs and research operations wing of Virgin Galactic as well as its sister concern, Virgin Orbit. During the space flight, which is the 22nd for VSS Unity, Sirisha's role will be to evaluate research experience.

The design philosophy of the aircraft is geared around making high speed travel practical, sustainable, safe, and reliable, while making customer experience a top priority. The company is designing the aircraft for a range of operational scenarios, including service for passengers on long-distance commercial aviation routes. The aircraft would take off and land like any other passenger aircraft.
