Egypt's armed forces say they have killed three "high-level" suspected militants and arrested 74 others in sweeps in the troubled northern Sinai Peninsula in recent days.

A militant group called Ansar al-Islam claimed responsibility for an attack in Egypt`s Western Desert that killed several policemen on Oct. 21, the newly emerged group said in a statement on Friday.

The army, backed by aircraft from the US-led coalition and local tribal fighters, launched their sweep at dawn in desert areas of Anbar province where the jihadists have hideouts, an army lieutenant colonel said.
