Dept of Food and Distribution corporation denies media reports claiming wheat import by govt.
As per Food Corporation of India website, the stock of wheat in the central pool is 266.45 lakh tonnes as of 21 August, 2022.
Govt banned wheat export in May to maintain food security in India.
The grain is grown only once in a year in India, with plantings in October and harvests from March.
The trade data showed that private traders imported about 8.5 lakh tonnes of wheat since April at 10 per cent import duty. Another 1.5 lakh tonnes of shipments are expected to arrive.
The government has imposed 10 percent import duty on wheat and tur dal with immediate effect in a bid to protect farmers' interest, amid projection of a record crop this year.
