The World Happiness Report is based on people's self-assessment of their happiness as well as economic and social data.
It provides a happiness score on a scale ranging from zero to 10.
The United States jumped three places to 16th position, one rank ahead of Britain.
Finland has been ranked as the happiest country in the world.
India ranks 139th on the list.
United States ranks 19th place for happiness, despite being one of the richest countries in the world.
The United Nations (UN) on Firday released its World Happiness Report and India was at a dismal 144 rank of a total 156 nations surveyed. India has been scored at 3.573 points nestled between Lesotho and Malawi nations. Pakistan, on the other hand, has been ranked 66 with a score of 5.693.
India slipped 11 places from last year and is far behind all of its SAARC neighbours barring war-ravaged Afghanistan.
It's really sad and tough to accept but the bitter truth is that India ranked a lowly 122 on a list of the world's happiest countries, dropping four slots from last year and coming behind China, Pakistan and Nepal.
Other factors by which 155 countries were measured in the annual World Happiness Report are: inequality, life expectancy, GDP per capita, public trust (i.e. a lack of corruption in government and business), and social support.
