XE Variant of Covid-19 News
Rajesh Tope said that the elderly man and his wife who had been in Mumbai tested positive for coronavirus in Gujarat last month.
The XE variant is a combination or recombinant of both sub-variants -- BA.1 and BA.2 -- of Omicron.
Gujarat reported its first case of the XE variant after a man from Mumbai tested positive for COVID-19.
The new variant was found in a patient who had tested positive for the virus a month ago.
The 67-year-old man had travelled from Mumbai to Vadodara.
The XE variant is a recombinant of BA.1 and BA.2, the sub-lineages of SARS-CoV-2, the virus which causes Covid-19
The World Health Organisation had recently said that a new Covid mutant XE has been found in the UK
WHO had noted that it may be more transmissible than the BA.2 sublineage of Covid-19
So far, experts say there's "no information whether the clinical symptoms are worse, or whether its immune escape is more"
The World Health Organisation on April 2 said XE appears to be more transmissible than previous strains of the coronavirus
WHO said Covid-19 remains a public health emergency of international concern and warned that it is too early to reduce the quality of surveillance
