According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun, the SCO summit to be held in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1 will be the largest summit ever held since the organisation was founded. Leaders from more than 20 countries, including all SCO member states, and heads of 10 international organisations are expected to attend the summit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit China for the SCO Summit in Tianjin on August 31–September 1, 2025, marking his first visit to the country since 2019. While the visit has not been officially confirmed, the talks between EAM Jaishankar and President Xi Jinping hint that preparations are underway.

 US President Donald Trump announced that a trade deal with China has been finalized, pending approval from both him and Chinese President Xi Jinping. This development comes after White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett expressed expectations for a conversation between Trump and Xi earlier on Sunday.

Xi, who is under pressure after Trump’s unprecedented 145 per cent tariffs against Chinese exports to the US which amounted to over USD 438 billion last year, spoke of focussing on joint modernisation of Asia along with China’s neighbours as part of its new policy to reduce trade dependence on the US and the EU.    

China increased additional tariffs on imported US products from 84 per cent to 125 per cent.

Trump's threat of the additional 50 per cent tariffs on China on Monday came after Beijing refused to withdraw the 34 per cent tariffs on US goods by Tuesday, which it had announced to retaliate Trump's 34 per cent levy on Chinese goods announced last week.

The bilateral talks between the two leaders are set to take place as Beijing has signalled its desire to expand ties with Dhaka in a changed Bangladesh scenario.

China's vital export market could be impacted if US consumers decide to “buy American.”

The US-China relationship is expected to be a major focus of Trump's second term, with rising tensions in trade, technology, and over Taiwan. 

In recent years, Xi, who is in his third five-year term, made it a major military and diplomatic initiative to step up efforts to reintegrate Taiwan with China. 

While the invitation underscores Trump’s approach of maintaining dialogue with both allies and adversaries, sources suggest that Xi is unlikely to attend, CBS News reported.

Xi met Oli and expressed appreciation for the Nepalese leader's firm commitment to promoting friendship between the two sides over a long period.

At their Kazan meeting, the two leaders endorsed the India-China agreement on patrolling and disengagement along the LAC in eastern Ladakh.
