Maharashtra have been urged to focus on screening pregnant women for Zika virus and monitor the growth of foetus of expecting mothers who tested positive for the infection.

Health Minister Gan Kim Yong, in a statement in Parliament, said that over 500 blood samples a month were tested for Zika from January this year. Close to 4,000 blood samples were tested between February and August, before the first confirmed case was reported on August 27, he said.

The US state of Florida has identified 10 additional cases likely caused by local mosquito bites, bringing the total number of people with locally transmitted Zika to 14.
