Al-Qaeda suspects carried out twin suicide bombings and took hostages on Sunday, officials said, as they struck at the heart of the Yemeni government after suffering a string of setbacks.

The Saudi-led coalition intervened in Yemen in 2015, when Hadi fled into exile as the rebels threatened to overrun his last stronghold.

A suspected Al-Qaeda suicide bomber killed three Yemeni soldiers and wounded nine others in an attack Tuesday on an army position in the country`s south, military officials said.

There was heavy fighting in Yemen hours before the truce began.  

The conflict in Yemen has killed almost 6,900 people, wounded more than 35,000 and displaced at least three million since March last year.

Saudi Arabia intercepted a ballistic missile that Yemeni rebels fired towards the kingdom`s southern city of Abha early Monday, the Riyadh-led coalition fighting the insurgents said.

Yemen`s warring parties are taking a two-week break from peace talks in Kuwait that have made little headway since they began on April 21.
